The Humane Society of Pulaski County (HSPC) is currently hiring for the following positions:
KENNEL WORKER – $8.75/hr, FULL-TIME
HSPC kennel workers are responsible for feeding & handling dogs and/or cats, cleaning animal kennels, sweeping and mopping facility areas, washing laundry, and other tasks keeping facilities neat & tidy and our animals safe & healthy.
Applicants must be comfortable working with/handling dogs & cats; can follow instruction well; work well independently; communicate well, and work both inside and outside year-round.
This is a full time, 40 hour/week position, and kennel workers will work five days on and two off. Applicants must be able to lift 45 pounds, be physically fit and agile, and have reliable transportation. A drug test is required prior to employment.

JOB TITLE: Weekend Veterinary Technician (or Veterinary Assistant) Part-time position: Every weekend (Saturday and Sunday), with options for additional hours
The Humane Society of Pulaski County is seeking to hire a Weekend Veterinary Technician (or Veterinary Assistant). We are a private non-profit (501c3) no-kill animal shelter in Little Rock, Arkansas. We have one full-time veterinarian on staff (who has been with us for over 10 years) and an in-house medical clinic. Our intake includes only dogs and cats.
Summary
The HSPC veterinarian is not normally present at the shelter on weekends. The Weekend Vet Tech (or Vet Assistant) will be responsible for the triage of sick or injured patients, assisting in the decision as to whether the patient should be immediately transferred to an emergency/specialty clinic.
Job Responsibilities
- Triage sick or injured patients
- Dispense daily medications PO or SQ
- Administer vaccinations (excluding rabies)
- Obtain and record vitals such as temperature, RR, HR, MM color, CRT, eye reflex and LOC
- Perform venipuncture
- Obtain fecal samples
- Run tests for disease (e.g. Heartworm and Parvo in dogs, FeLV and FIV in cats)
- Maintain medical records in our shelter database (Animal Shelter Manager or ASM)
- Note any signs of disease or illness in patients and communicate that information to the veterinarian
- Prepare surgical packs
- Provide fresh water, food, and bedding to patients in medical clinic
- Walk clinic dogs
- Some bathing and grooming
- Work with entire shelter staff to maintain sanitary conditions to prevent the spread of illness and disease
- Know and follow quarantine protocols
- Responsibilities include cleaning of medical clinic, and recovery area where animals are housed
- Keep treatment area, surgical area, and lab clean and organized
Qualifications/Requirements
- High school diploma or GED
- At least one year of experience working as a Veterinary Technician or a Veterinary Assistant in a veterinary clinic environment (shelter experience is a plus)
- Must pass a pre-employment drug test, as well as all future random drug tests
- Probation period of 3 months
- Valid Arkansas driver’s license and reliable transportation
- Reliable cell phone
- Able to lift and carry 35 pounds safely
- Able to restrain cats and small to very large dogs with minimal stress to the patient and minimal risk to the veterinarian
- Must possess basic first aid knowledge
- Must be able to perform venipuncture
- Ability to place an IV catheter is a plus
- Ability to intubate an animal for surgery is a plus
- Experience in anesthesia and surgery is a plus
- A strong commitment to the welfare and proper treatment of animals is required
- Must possess genuine compassion for all patients
- Positive attitude and professional demeanor
- Must have a team attitude, and be willing to help other staff in working towards a goal of excellent patient care
- Work well independently – and also as a team member – to complete all tasks assigned
Work Conditions
Work is performed in a high noise area. Exposure to industrial cleaning chemicals, fumes, dust, animal feces, zoonotic diseases, bites and scratches. Safety procedures must be adhered to at all times.
The Veterinary Technician (or Veterinary Assistant) is a key member of the medical team; the responsibilities described above are necessary to perform the duties of this position but should not be construed as a complete description of all the requirements that may be inherent in the position.
Compensation
Starting salary is $11.00/hour. Salary increases will be based on abilities and performance.
Hours
Every Saturday and Sunday, 8:30 am – 5:30 pm with one hour for lunch
There may be options for additional weekday hours
