Employment Opportunities

The Humane Society of Pulaski County (HSPC) is seeking a highly motivated, process and procedure-oriented manager committed to the mission, values, goals, and success of HSPC to oversee the daily operations of our animal shelter.

Job Title: Shelter Director
Location: Little Rock, Arkansas
Job Type: Full-Time

Salary: 60-75K
NOTE: Upper salary range is reserved for top candidates who demonstrate exceptional qualifications and experience.

The Humane Society of Pulaski County (HSPC) is a well-established non-profit animal rescue organization. We maintain a private, no-kill shelter that is supported solely by donations, fundraisers, bequests, and grants. We receive no city, county, or state funding, nor are we affiliated with any other organization.  The Shelter Director will ensure the well-being of all animals in our care, manage staff, and maintain a clean, compassionate, and safe environment. This role requires strong leadership skills, a passion for animal welfare, an ability to interact with the public on various concerns, and the ability to handle multiple tasks in a fast-paced environment.

Key Responsibilities

Execution of HSPC’s mission to “rescue, rehabilitate, provide veterinary care, spay/neuter, and find loving homes for Central Arkansas dogs and cats in need.”  This includes regular proactive communication with the Board President.

• Animal Care: Ensure all animals are healthy and receive proper care, including feeding, grooming, exercise, and enrichment activities.

Animal Intake: Manage the intake of animals from area shelters, wait lists, and emergency needs. Animals taken into our limited admission shelter should have a solid potential to be rehomed. Often this means excluding animals with behavioral concerns and considering local breed restrictions. Monitor available space in the shelter and organize/schedule intake appointments.

Staff Management: Recruit, train, and supervise shelter staff. Prepare staff schedules to ensure adequate coverage of PTO, sick, and personal absences. Conduct regular performance evaluations. Develop and lead weekly staff training and ongoing recognition programs.

Facility Management: Maintain a clean, safe, organized shelter environment. Oversee maintenance and repairs as needed.

Adoption Services: Oversee the adoption process. Manage and train adoption counselors to screen potential adopters, coordinate meet-and-greets, and process adoption paperwork.

• Veterinary Clinic Oversight: Coordinate and support the veterinary clinic on-site and ensure that shelter and veterinary office goals are aligned with an emphasis on compassion. The manager must ensure that animals in our isolation areas are cared for promptly and released for adoption as soon as possible, reducing their stay at the shelter. HSPC veterinary services are provided in-house for our rescued animals; we do not run a public clinic.

• Community Outreach: Establish and maintain strong partnerships with leaders of other rescues and city/county officials.

Budget Management: Manage expenses and provide feedback on the shelter’s budget. Monitor employee overtime and ensure resources are used responsibly and effectively.

Record Keeping: Ensure staff retains accurate records of animal intake, care, and adoptions. Ensure compliance with all relevant regulations and standards.

Qualifications
• A minimum of three years prior animal care experience, specifically in a shelter environment, is required
• Minimum of two years of supervisory experience required
• Commitment to the humane care and treatment of animals and HSPC’s no-kill policies.
• Knowledge of animal welfare laws
• Ability to communicate well orally and in writing and to work harmoniously with a diverse group of individuals
• Excellent written and oral communication skills
• Experience with computer technology, including Outlook, Excel, MS Word, database management, and the ability to learn new software as needed. Animal Shelter Manager (ASM) experience is a plus.
• Possess a valid Arkansas driver’s license with a clean driving record to drive organization vehicles and be covered by the organization’s insurance
• Strong communication and customer service skills. This includes developing ways to say “yes” where possible and firm in saying “no” when necessary.
• Schedule will include five eight-hour workdays, including one or more weekend days, and holidays.
• Be available after hours for emergency shelter needs.

Prospective applicants should send their resume or direct any questions to careers@warmhearts.org.
